Dean Sandoval Jr., a skilled Navajo silversmith, was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to parents who were traditional silversmiths. He grew up in Tohajilee (formerly known as Cañoncito) on the Navajo reservation, where he and his siblings learned the art of silversmithing from an early age. His mother, Alta Sandoval, and his sister, Bonnie Sandoval, continue to work as silversmiths.
